It can be overwhelming to choose that perfect type of wood for your furniture, especially when you have a range of options, or feel stranded in between choosing the right mix of durability, aesthetics, and price.

To make things easier, we’ve come up with a brief guide to help you make the right decision. Since there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, you have to carefully evaluate your space, climate, and lifestyle. Let’s take a look at some of the popular types of wood that you can choose from for your custom furniture:

Solid Wood

Solid wood is a kind of material that doesn’t have hollow spaces in it. It is usually preferred due to its strength and properties to resist deterioration. When it comes to furnishing a home or office in Australia, solid wood can be a great option. We can say solid wood is raw wood that comes straight from a tree. However, the quality of solid wood can differ depending on which tree it is derived from.

Hardwood

As compared to softwood, hardwood is denser. Hardwood lumber comes from deciduous trees that shed their leaves once a year. These trees grow at a slow pace. Most of the premium quality furniture is built from the hardwood family. Some of the most popular hardwoods used in custom furniture making include oak, beech, walnut, maple, and hickory.

Softwood

On the other hand, softwood is less dense and generally comes from coniferous trees that grow quickly. In some projects, carpenters may prefer to use softwood such as pine, fir, and spruce.

Engineered wood

It’s possible to take 3 or 5 slices of thin lumber and combine them with adhesive to create a totally different furniture material. Plywood is one of the types of engineered wood that contain various types of wood. It’s widely used in furniture making around the globe. However, it doesn’t offer the durability and aesthetics of hardwood. Fiberboard is another example of engineered wood that is made using a wood-chipper to break down lumber into fibers and combining them with adhesive.
